Straight into Niagara: Ice Cube comes to Meridian Centre in May

- JOHN LAW REPORTER

Hip-hop legend Ice Cube is heading to Meridian Centre in May.

The rapper, actor and founding member of the iconic band N.W.A. will bring the second leg of his "Straight into Canada" tour to the St. Catharines arena May 2 — one of 20 Canadian dates he’s playing into the spring.

Tickets range from $69.50 to $129.50, and are on sale at www.ticketmaster.ca.

Members of Meridian Centre’s In the Know newsletter will get presale access on Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. both days.

It marks one of the biggest concerts in recent years for Meridian Centre.

Ice Cube made his mark in the late 1980s with N.W.A. alongside Dr. Dre, Eazy-E and Arabian Prince. The band’s visionary debut album “Straight Outta Compton” was hugely influential and became the first rap album to be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. It has also been recognized by the Library of Congress as a culturally significant work, enshrining it into the National Recording Registry.

Friction led to Cube leaving the band shortly after its release, paving the way for an even richer solo and movie career.

Cube’s first two albums— 1990’s “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” and 1991’s “Death Certificate”— were greeted as angry, instant classics. His third release, 1992’s “The Predator,” captured the mood of a nation after the L.A. riots and debuted at No. 1. It contains his biggest single, “It Was a Good Day.”

His movie career got off to an unforgettable start, playing the vengeful Doughboy in 1991’s “Boyz n the Hood.” He has done more than 40 films since, including “Anaconda,” “Three Kings” and both the “Friday” and “Barbershop” comedy series.

He was inducted as a member of N.W.A. into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
