Brock celebrates some great athletic achievements
A volleyball setter who set a program record for career assists and a hockey goaltender who led the nation in victories before signing a National Hockey League contract are the 2023-24 Brock University athletes of the year.
Sara Rohr, who helped lead the Badgers to a third Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship, led the conference with 10.9 assists per set and finished her career at Brock with an excellent 2,677 assists.
Rohr, the university’s first volleyball player selected as top female athlete since Tanya Stephens won the award in 1992-93, was among 26 student-athletes recognized as allCanadians at an awards gala Wednesday night at Americana Conference Resort Spa & Waterpark in Niagara Falls.
Ungar backstopped the Badgers to 20 wins, best in the conference as well as tops in Canada, and earned U Sports and OUA West Division rookie of the year honours.
The Calgary native recently signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
Clint Windsor, the last hockey player to win male athlete of the year honours at Brock, was also a goaltender. He won the award in 2017-18.
Ungar’s coach, TJ Manastersky, was selected as men’s coach of the year at the annual awards banquet, while Dave Collie was honoured for guiding the women’s wrestling team to its 11th national championship and ninth provincial title in a row.
Manastersky’s 2023-24 team advanced to the national championship for the fourth time in program history and set a record for regularseason wins, with 21.
Collie’s squad, which also was celebrated as women’s team of the year, earned 10 individual gold medals, six silvers and two bronzes over the U Sports and OUA championship tournaments.
The men’s wrestling team, led by head coach Marty Calder, pinned down the national championship for the ninth straight time and for the 22nd time in program history. At the U Sports championship, the Badgers won five gold medals and settled for silver in three weight classes.

Brock players earned 17 major ho- nours as well as eight coach of the year awards during the past season.
