Speed cameras are needed

-

Re: Niagara speed cameras poised to multiply, April 10

It is sad people are still upset about these cameras. It bothers me and I’m really concerned about the people who damage them.

When people go out in the middle of the night and cut the cameras down — and I want folks to think hard about this — what other damage or harmful acts are they willing to do?

These are the ones I would be afraid of who drive on our roads.

The cameras are needed everywhere and I have been fighting for a long time to have the Region put them in. If you get tickets for speeding or running a red light, then it is your own fault and rightfully you should be ticketed.

Welland regional Coun. Pat Chiocchio mentioned putting in speed bumps or flashing lights. This does not work. For years I waited to have speed bumps put in and all I got was a flashing light. Drivers still come racing through, not stopping and passing school buses when they are letting children on and off.

Even members of Niagara Regional Police don’t follow the rules. You see them take a corner while the school bus lights are flashing and their stop sign is out, clear to see.

The reason I get down on this so hard is I was a victim who was badly hurt in an accident by a speeder who was doing 145 km/h in a school zone and tried to pass four cars behind me and a transport truck in front of me on a corner. I will not go into further detail but I am lucky to be alive.

Instead of money, start worrying about the lives that can be saved, especially in school zones, but also everywhere. As for the vandalism, set up a camera that can detect those who vandalize them.
