Stunt driving charge laid against motorcyclist in Fort Erie
Niagara Regional Police say they have identified a 20-year-old Fort Erie motorcyclist who was seen allegedly performing dangerous stunts in town and who had all but dared them to chase after him.
Just after 10 p.m. on April 7, officers were called to Derby Road and Conway Place for a report of a motorcycle being driven dangerously. A short time later, an officer saw a man on a bike matching the description in the area of Ridgeway Road and Roxborough Avenue, police said in a media release.
Police said the motorcycle was being driven fast and the driver was pulling “wheelies.” He then drove up and down Roxborough, accelerating past police in an attempt to bait them into a pursuit, police said in the release.
Police opted not to pursue the bike out of concern for public safety.
Police sent out a release with a suspect description, as well as a description of the vehicle, which was said to be a red and white sport bike. The release included a surveillance image of the man on the bike.
Officers from the traffic enforcement unit have been trying to identify the driver since then.
On Monday, police sent out an update saying they had identified a suspect and met the man in Fort Erie on May 3, seizing and impounding his motorcycle, a Yamaha R6 that had since been repainted black and grey.
The suspect has been charged with provincial offences, including driving a vehicle while performing a stunt, operating a vehicle on a highway without insurance, using a plate not authorized for the vehicle and driving a motor vehicle with an improper licence.
The man’s driver’s licence has also been suspended for 30 days. The motorcycle will be impounded for 14 days.
