Richard Dreyfuss coming to Frightmare in the Falls

- JOHN LAW REPORTER

Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss will have a close encounter with Niagara Falls this October.

The “Jaws” star is appearing at the annual Frightmare in the Falls horror convention, set for Oct. 25 to 27 at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre.

Dreyfuss will be one of the highest-profile guests the show has seen since it began in 2017.

He’s the first guest announced for this year.

Frightmare is the sister show of the Niagara Falls Comic Con, run by organizers Chris Dabrowski and James Ponce.

Last year’s event was the first to go three days, making it the largest horror-themed event in Canada.

Guests through the years have included Adrienne Barbeau (“The Fog,” “Creepshow”), David Howard Thornton (“Terrifier”) and Ron Perlman (“Hellboy”).

It will be Dreyfuss’ first public appearance in Niagara Falls since he was the guest speaker at the annual Pathstone Foundation Hope Award gala in 2013.

Speaking with The Review before the event, Dreyfuss lamented the state of modern filmmaking and its reliance on big budget blockbusters — a trend, he realizes, that started with “Jaws” in 1975.

“We invented the blockbuster,” he said, “and Steven (Spielberg, director) just talked yesterday about the death of the blockbuster and what’s going to come after. You’re going to have to go back to the old days, where you make a film about Kansas and hope to God someone in Nigeria finds it interesting.”

In addition to “Jaws,” Dreyfuss was part of some of the most iconic movies of the 1970s, including “American Graffiti” in 1973 and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” in 1977.

He won the Oscar for Best Actor for 1977’s “The Goodbye Girl.”
