Fly­ers can't hold lead

The Petro­lia Fly­ers lost 9-3 to the Es­sex 73's on Thurs­day in the Pro­vin­cial Junior Hockey League's Sto­bbs Divi­sion.

Clay Dol­bear, Mark McNally and Josh Jamieson scored for the eighth-place Fly­ers (5-16-0-3) in front of 165 fans at the Green­wood Recre­ation Cen­tre in Petro­lia.

The Fly­ers led 2-1 mid­way through the first pe­riod, but the 73's scored the next five goals. The 73's were up 4-2 af­ter one pe­riod and 6-2 af­ter two.

Fly­ers goalie Chaska Thiel gave up six goals on 22 shots in the first two pe­ri­ods. Josh Lo­r­anger stopped 18 of 21 shots in the third.

Wil­liam Stad­der scored two for the first-place 73's (20-4-0-3). Ja­cob Cruick­shank, Jack Sanko, Michael Vieira, Adam Ga­iarin, Michael Rut­tinger, Josh Pope-Fer­gu­son and Ri­ley Mey­erink added sin­gles. Con­nor Mey­erink made 23 saves. The Fly­ers will visit the win­less Wal­lace­burg Lak­ers on Wed­nes­day, Dec. 12.
