Gov­ern­ment, com­mu­nity part­ners for $2.23 mil­lion well­ness cen­tre in Bonavista

New cen­tre to be con­structed at site of for­mer Cabot Col­le­giate

An old high school in Bonavista is get­ting a re­fit to serve as a well­ness cen­tre for the Bonavista Penin­sula.

The province’s health min­is­ter, John Hag­gie, was in Bonavista on Fri­day, Aug. 24, to an­nounce a $2.23 mil­lion part­ner­ship be­tween the province, and the Town of Bonavista, Tip-A-Vista Well­ness, the Bonavista Pri­mary Health Care Com­mu­nity Ad­vi­sory Com­mit­tee, the Dis­cov­ery Health Foun­da­tion, East­ern Health, and other com­mu­nity part­ners.

Ren­o­va­tions are al­ready un­der­way at the for­mer Cabot Col­le­giate build­ing, which served as the lo­cal high school un­til the later 1980s.

The cen­tre, which will in­clude a gym­na­sium and ex­er­cise room, a com­mu­nity kitchen, and meet­ing space, is sched­uled to open next sum­mer.

“Co-lo­cat­ing pri­mary care, pub­lic health, and men­tal health and ad­dic­tions providers bol­sters ef­forts to im­prove col­lab­o­ra­tion among health care pro­fes­sion­als, which has been proven to lead to bet­ter health out­comes for pa­tients,” Hag­gie said in a news re­lease is­sued the day of his of­fi­cial an­nounce­ment.

The well­ness cen­tre will also be the site for ser­vices around chronic dis­ease man­age­ment, pub­lic health, home and com­mu­nity sup­ports, and men­tal health and ad­dic­tions.
