Government, community partners for $2.23 million wellness centre in Bonavista
New centre to be constructed at site of former Cabot Collegiate
An old high school in Bonavista is getting a refit to serve as a wellness centre for the Bonavista Peninsula.
The province’s health minister, John Haggie, was in Bonavista on Friday, Aug. 24, to announce a $2.23 million partnership between the province, and the Town of Bonavista, Tip-A-Vista Wellness, the Bonavista Primary Health Care Community Advisory Committee, the Discovery Health Foundation, Eastern Health, and other community partners.
Renovations are already underway at the former Cabot Collegiate building, which served as the local high school until the later 1980s.
The centre, which will include a gymnasium and exercise room, a community kitchen, and meeting space, is scheduled to open next summer.
“Co-locating primary care, public health, and mental health and addictions providers bolsters efforts to improve collaboration among health care professionals, which has been proven to lead to better health outcomes for patients,” Haggie said in a news release issued the day of his official announcement.
The wellness centre will also be the site for services around chronic disease management, public health, home and community supports, and mental health and addictions.
