One way streets causing uproar

A controversy seems to be brewing in the town of Bonavista over a decision of the town council to designate two streets in the town as one-way thoroughfares.

The decision was apparently made at a recent council meeting of council and a number of businessesmen in the town are not too pleased with the situation. A spokeman for the businessmen, Gordon Bradley, who is a former mayor of Bonavista, says that council acted outside its jurisdiction in declaring the streets as one way.

He pointed out that Church Street is part of the old Cabot Highway and, as such, comes under the jurisdiction of the provincial department of transportation and communications.

Mr. Bradley says that the action by council does not have the sanction of the minister of that department, neither was it done in consultation with the businesses located on Church Street.
