While many spectators thoroughly enjoy the Santa Claus parades in their home communities each Christmas, the end product consisting of elaborate floats, colourful costumes and choreographed maneuvers is the result of hours of hard work by many community groups.

One of the groups who participated in the Clarenville parade this past Saturday, Dec. 8, was the Clarenville Scouts.

The group of just over a dozen Scouters created their own costumes this year, as they marched along as reindeer in the Santa Claus parade.

The Scouts put their sewing skills to work, hand-making the outfits needed for the event.

Thirteen-year-old Aidan Frye says he learned how to sew the first year he was in Scouts because they needed to put badges on their uniform.

They sewed white stomachs, tails and spots on the brown costumes for the parade, in addition to antlers to wear on their heads.

They told The Packet they’re glad to help prepare and are generally excited for the Christmas season itself.

As for the Scouts, they agreed their favourite part is camping—both in summer and winter.

The ideas for the parade are a group effort which are voted on by the members. Leaders Harvey Locke, Tenille Stringer and Arlene Frampton told The Packet they try to come up with a different theme each year for the parade.

The hard work by the Scouts is just one of the activities they are planning.

The group is also looking forward to mummering at local retirement homes again this year, transported by the CREST bus.

“It’s another one of the things the kids continue to want to do,” explained Stringer.

So, while Santa’s elves are hard at work this holiday season at the North Pole, don’t forget about the local community groups around the region who are busy participating in activities and preparing worthwhile endeavours for Christmas.

The Clarenville Scouts are busy elves this holiday season, with several projects in the works before Christmas, including donating to Bellies and Bottoms and mummering with the CREST bus.

Scout Aidan Frye shows off the work he had completed thus far.
