Longo competing in Italian pageant
Peterborough’s Theresa Longo is heading to Italy in June to represent Canada at the Miss Italia del Mondo pageant — so she’s working on her Italian.
“Unfortunately, nobody in my family speaks Italian,” says Longo, who is of Italian descent.
“Speaking Italian will be part of the competition, so I’m working hard on learning it as quickly as I can.”
The pageant is aimed at the Italian diaspora, women of Italian origin living in countries around the world. Longo was crowned Miss Italia North America at a pageant in Hamilton and will compete against about 60 other young women from around the world.
Longo, 24, is a model and events planner who spent 2010 as Miss Budweiser Honda Indy. She has also been the Toronto Sun’s Sunshine Girl more than once.
The 2009 graduate of Trent University’s business program was born and raised in the city, and is the daughter of Chris and Gerrine Longo.
Longo said she heads to Italy June 8, with the pageant happening June 25. The weeks prior will be spent rehearsing and taking part in televised activities, as the program will be broadcast on Italian TV.
Founded in 1991, the pageant is held each year in Italy. Last year ’s winner was Kimberly Castillo from the Dominican Republic. Other winners have come from Switzerland, the U .S . , Ethiopia, Austra l ia , Brazil and Germany; no Canadian has ever won.
