FOUR SENT TO HOSPITAL
Four pedestrians, including two young children, hit by car while crossing Lansdowne; one of pedestrians faces jaywalking charge
Two children in strollers involved in pedestrian crash.
Two young children and two adults were hospitalized Thursday afternoon after the group of pedestrians was struck by a car while crossing Lansdowne St. East just west of Ashburnham Rd.
A man and woman were crossing the road, each pushing a stroller when an eastbound car struck the group just before 3 p.m., Peterborough Emergency Medical Services Chief Bob English said at the scene.
All four were taken to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, however, none appeared to have suffered serious injuries, he said.
One of the pedestrians, Dustin Montgomery, 29, of Peterborough, was charged with jaywalking under the Highway Traffic Act, city police Staff Sgt. Neil Collins said Thursday night.
No other charges were laid, Collins said.
The collision blocked traffic at the busy intersection while paramedics treated the patients and police interviewed the distraught driver and witnesses.
The man cradled one of the young children in his arms before the child was placed on a stretcher with a balloon by his side. The young child was crying while being placed in the ambulance.
A grey sedan with a cracked windshield sat in the eastbound lane while spilt coffee and a box of doughnuts were sprawled out nearby.
Pepsi truck driver Chris Hickson was making a delivery at the nearby Mac’s convenience store when he saw the couple walking across the road with the two strollers. The two did not use the nearby crosswalk, but Hickson said there did appear to be a lull in the busy traffic.
Hickson said he didn’t see the collision, but he heard it.
“I saw them about to cross the road and then I heard the impact,” he said. “I heard her (the driver) hit the brakes, but it was too late.”
Hickson said he ran onto the road and grabbed one of the children out of a stroller that had been struck.
“I got him out of the stroller and just tried to help calm him down while EMS arrived,” he said. “He was crying. He had some scrapes and bruises.”
