LDSS to field football team

-

Taking to the field: Lakefield District Secondary School could have its first football team in 44 years next fall.

Teacher Mac Arnott, who has guided the school’s volleyball program in recent years, has put the wheels in motion to field a junior football team next season.

Arnott and principal Dave Lorentz have secured equipment, used and borrowed, and 51 players signed a sheet signifying their intent to attend tryouts.

Arnott says Tyler Chambers and a couple of community volunteers will assist him with coaching. If enough players stick with the program, he'd look to expand to a senior team in the future.

Arnott said the school hasn’t fielded a team since “1967 or '68.” He said he and Lorentz hope it will lead to more students becoming involved in extracurricular activities.

***** In Defence of the Saints: While the St. Peter’s Saints finished fifth at the OFSAA Festival AAA/AAAA field lacrosse tournament in Brampton last week, coach Rod McGillis felt there was plenty to be pleased with.

The team finished with a 4-1 record but the one loss eliminated them from advancing to the medal round.

In the five games, the Saints allowed only 16 goals against for a 3.2 goals against average. The Saints defence consisted of long poles Will Sullivan, Matt Price, Nick Saltern and long stick middie Robbie Wallbridge as well as goalie Boyd DiClemente. The Saints overall record this year was 15-4.

“The players had a great OFSAA,” McGillis said.

“They gave it everything they had and left it all on the field. We just needed to execute offensively a little better in the Denis Morris game (a 4-3 loss). Even in that game we fought to the final seconds. We are the COSSA champions and represented our league very well. I was very proud of our performance.”

***** Fore Fun: The second annual Peterborough Minor Hockey Association Fun Golf Event is July 21 with a shotgun start at Tamarac Golf and Country Club.

The cost is $75 for the scramble format. Other features include a hockey stick putting challenge, silent auction, prizes for best and worst dressed golfers, closest to the par-3 pins, longest drives and a few surprise Fun-on-Course Challenges. A meal follows the golf. Hole and prize sponsors are still needed.
