MSL all-time leader scorer John Tavares not expected back by Lakers

The hottest commodity on the MSL trade market appears to be off the trading block.

Left shot sniper Ryan Benesch suited up the past two games for the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks. The Lakers and Six Nations Chiefs had been in talks with the Kodiaks about acquiring the Minnesota Swarm star.

The asking price proved to be prohibitive, according to Lakers sources. It’s also not clear how much Benesch can commit to playing summer lacrosse because of commitments he has with the Swarm in Minnesota.

Lakers GM Jamie Batley said unless something unexpected pops up, he doesn’t anticipate any further moves prior to the July 1 roster freeze.

Batley said he also doesn’t expect John Tavares to return to the Lakers. The move to acquire lefty Pat Saunders last week was a recognition the Lakers were filling the spot vacated by Tavares.

“We knew we were going to have to replace John at some point,” said Batley, of the 44year-old all-time scoring leader.

John Grant Jr. is expected to make his 2013 Lakers debut Wednesday when Peterborough visits Brooklin. He’ll play his first home game the next night against Six Nations. June 10, three assists and the game winning goal in a 13-12 win June 13 against Oakville and two goals and an assist in Sunday’s 8-5 win in Brampton.

Other honours went to Brooklin’s Shawn Williams as top offensive player for recording 12 points in two games. The Brampton Excelsiors Chris Corbeil was named best defensive player and teammate Ethan O’Connor top rookie for his strong defensive and transition play.
