Blondes and brunettes have fun with summer colours

- ROSALYN SOLOMON

From your hair to pedicured toes, this season is definitely all about colour. But instead of styling yourself from your closet, experts recommend to start with your hair instead. The John Frieda Colour Council, made up of hair expert and stylist Alain Laviree, international makeup artist Anna Nenoiu, and international fashion stylist Zeina Esmail, have been travelling the country to encourage women to use their hair colour to style themselves this spring. They’re also helping to introduce a shampoo and conditioning line specific to the needs of blondes (Sheer Blonde), brunettes (Brilliant Brunette) and redheads (Radiant Red) to help maintain that fresh-coloured look.

Here’s a breakdown of their expert tips for blondes and brunettes. (Psst ... redheads and ladies with black hair check back for your tips.)

BLONDES

Alain on hair: For the blondes the main thing we try to do is maintain the tonality of the hair.

What happens with blonde hair after two weeks or so of shampooing it, the colour goes a little yellow, the blue hues or the blue pigments that are in the basic colour mixture gets washed out of the hair.

Zeina on clothes: Why blondes wear white so well is because white reflects light and blonde hair reflects light, so it really intensifies the highlights and low lights of blonde hair. The other colour we saw on blondes is this aquatic theme with blues and aquas. Blondes wear blue so well because when a blonde wears blue it complements the blue undertones in the hair.

Anna on makeup: One trend in particular that works really well for blondes that we saw for Spring 2013 is the strong bold eyeliners. The juxtaposition of the strong, bold eyeliner elevates the fairness of the hair.

BRUNETTES

Zeina on clothes: What we saw on the runways and what we’re seeing everywhere is colour, and brunettes wear colour so well; poppy colours, bright colours, jewel tones ruby red and sapphires. Brunettes have warmer tones like auburn or gold in their hair. Warm works well with warm so when you wear these colours it really picks you up.

Anna on makeup: Brunettes are by far the most versatile when it comes to make up. One of my favourite trends is the bold poppy bright lip.

Alain on hair: What happens with brown hair is the water strips the colour out and it makes it look really matte. The colour protection will allow you to keep that fresh feeling for 10 weeks which is something I’ve never been able to say as a hair professional.
