Art and soul

- JANE STEVENSON

SANTAFE,N.M.—Haveyoueverwondered what it might be like to wander around in one of acclaimed American painter Georgia O’Keeffe’s striking southwestern landscapes? Or how about one of the artist’s two homes in her beloved northern New Mexico, 29 km apart from each other in Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu (pronounced Abacue), where she also frequently painted?

Turns out you can, as I recently discovered during a visit to a new exhibit — Georgia O’Keeffe in New Mexico: Architecture, Katsinam, and The Land — on until Sept. 11 at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in downtown Santa Fe.

Once you’ve seen her paintings and toured the nearby Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center — an endless treasure trove displaying her paints, pastels, brushes, colour samples, paintbox, rocks, shells and bones she collected, and some of her books — enrich the experience by making a pilgrimage to the red clay desert and O’Keeffe’s beloved Pedernal Mountain about an hour away.

Housed in the world’s first and only museum dedicated to an American woman artist (and New Mexico’s most visited museum with 100,000 visitors a year) the exhibit is significant as it contains many paintings O’Keeffe did upon her 1929 arrival in New Mexico, before she moved there permanently 20 years later.

There are also paintings of katsina dolls (Hopi spirit beings) that she rarely exhibited and were generally unknown to the public.

If you decide to see the new exhibit in the morning and the two homes in the afternoon — I actually advise two days so you can take your time at each place. contact. In the evenings they came together for thousands of hours of stitching and conversation.

The tapestry has become a new attraction that draws visitors to Conche.
