Summer Company is a youth program offered by the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment, administered through the GPAEDC. The program provides students aged 15 to 29 with the opportunity to open and operate their own business over the summer.

This summer’s crop of student entrepreneurs was announced last week and include: Travis Brault of Peterborough Student Property Services offering lawn care and yard maintenance, Emily Bruno of Just Dance who does Zumba fitness classes, James Julien Capalbo-Jacobs and his Mr. Numm Naa’s, which is a mobile frozen treat stand. Andie Doan has Andie’s Boat Cleaning Services for both interiors and exteriors. Heather Francis has Place in Nature Studio, doing ceramic garden sculptures, including toad houses, which are fired in a metal garbage can filled with straw, creating a beautiful piece of art and a fun filled fire at the same time.

Garrett Gilbart’s Burn Island Creative is reclaimed furniture design, Aaron Hoffman Production offers mobile music recording services. Michael Kozelj is another pyromaniac with his company Factory Direct Fireworks offering mobile retail fireworks, and Ryan Lee’s Reel Videography provides promotional videography services.

Each of these young business people receives a bit of start up funding, ongoing training and support, and a great opportunity to learn. Details online at www.peterboroughcanada.co m.

STILL GOING STRONG

And apparently I caused Laurie Jones Hair Salon some grief last week when I located the new Electric City Bread Company on Sherbrooke St. beside the Avante Garden Shop and Pasta Plus, without mentioning Laurie Jones Hair. Laurie had lots of calls wondering if she was still in business. My sincere apologies to Laurie and her staff who have been in business a few decades and are indeed still there.
