Fight bugs naturally
Trent Vegetable Garden team hosts a workshop on natural pest control inyourgarden
Got bugs in your garden and don’ t know what to do about them? Join Trent Vegetable Gardens for their interactive workshop, Insect Identification and Natural Pest Control, and learn all about how to manage those critters in your garden. Open to the community, this free workshop takes place Aug. 4 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Trent Field Garden.
Leader of the workshop, past Garden Coordinator Kirsten Go ek el, will help participants learn to identify good and harmful insects. She will also teach simple ecological practices that can minimize pest damage in the garden and will talk about insect life cycles, how to attract beneficial insects, basic garden practices to deter pests and more. There will also be the opportunity to do some troubleshooting together, so make sure you bring your garden pest questions.
The Trent Vegetable Field Garden is located northeast of the DNA and Life Sciences building at Trent University. It can be a little tricky to find, so here are some detailed instructions. Goto the main parking lot of the DNA building. Face the building and from there walk to the back left hand side of the parking lot where there will be a gate with a gravel road behind it. Walk past the gate and follow that path as it leads around to the left. Keep following that gravel road until it leads you directly into the field garden. It is just past the fenced in area. Do not take the other road veering to the right. That will lead you astray!
The Trent Vegetable Gardens area volunteer driven levy group at Trent University. Besides the Field Garden, where the workshop will take place, they also operate The Rooftop Garden, which is located on the Environmental Science Complex. The gardens employ organic, per maculture and heritage food production methods.
