First aid training is vital

St. John Ambulance offers classes during the summermont­hs

Emergencie­s never take a vacation. If you’re prepared with the right skills, you could save a life.

St. John Ambulance offers first aid training courses happening monthly in Ashburnham. Here’s a look at the upcoming weekday courses for August take place at the Peterborou­gh Lions community centre, 347 Burnham Street and Best Western Otonabee Inn. 84 Lansdowne St. E.

There are also weekend sessions at the SJA facility at Applewood Manor, 1500 Lansdowne St. W.

Standard First Aid

Standard first aid is designed to provide comprehens­ive first aid training, including CPR for adults and automated external defibrilla­tion (AED).

Classes in standard first aid with level A CPR are slated for Aug. 9 to Aug. 10 and Aug. 17 to Aug. 18 at the Lions centre; Aug. 24 to Aug. 25 at the Best Western. All times are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Standard first aid with level C CPR has an extra hour of training with the same dates and locations. Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Emergency First Aid

Emergency first aid provides basic first aid training and includes CPR and AED procedures.

Sessions in emergency first aid with level A CPR are planned for Aug. 9 or Aug. 17 at the Lions centre; Aug. 24 at the Best Western. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The same course with level C CPR and AED runs on the same dates. This class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you are looking for a weekend course, SJA offers workshops at their Applewood training facility, 1500 Lansdowne St. W.

Weekend class dates for standard first aid are: Aug. 6 to Aug. 7; Aug. 13 to Aug .14; Aug .20 to Aug .21 and Aug. 27 to Aug. 28. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for level A CPR and 8:30 to 5 p.m. for level C CPR.

Weekend courses in emergency first aid at Apple wood are planned for Aug .6; Aug .13; Aug .20 and Aug. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Renewals

If you need to re-certify your standard first aid certificat­e, there is a course slated for Aug. 16 at the Lions Centre. Hours are 8:30 to 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., depending on the level you choose.

If you have to renew your CPR level C training, there are four options. Take an afternoon session Aug .6; Aug .13 or Aug .20, running from 1:30 to 5 p.m. There is an evening course available Aug .30 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Babysittin­g course

The next course for Baby sitting/ Home Alone is slated for Sept. 30, a P.A. day.

The one day session runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. is geared to youth 10 to 14 years old.

This course prepares participan­ts to handle both of emergency and non-emergency situations.

Learning combines lectures with hands-on practice and includes a 60-page workbook. Registrati­on All SJA first aid courses come with a certificat­e valid for three years. For more info or to register, contact St. John Ambulance at 705-745-0331.

Theatre Guild

The Peter borough Theatre guild presents Maestro!, A Musical Extravagan­za from 1965 to the present.

It’s a celebratio­n of 50 years of theatre, song and dance that will wrap up the PTG’s 50th anniversar­y.

Performanc­es are scheduled for Aug. 5 to Aug. 13, with a matinee set for Aug. 7 at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices are: adults, $20; seniors, $18 and students, $11.

You can purchase your tickets during summer box office hours: Tuesdays through Saturdays, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays ,12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
