Australian rockers to return to city on Canadian tour

- SUSAN DOOLAN SPECIAL TO POSTMEDIA NETWORK -The Sudbury Star

Australian band The Lazys will return to Peterborough next month.

The continuing ‘Howling Woman’ Canadian tour is the fourth of the country for the rock ‘n’ roll band, which first came here on the heels of their second fulllength album, a self-titled release, in 2014. It was also their first overseas tour.

“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind,” singer Leon Harrison told Postmedia Network at the time. “We’re all pretty pleased. We love Canada, definitely.”

The five musicians, ranging in age from 24 to 33, started out like many bands “banging it out in the garage” when they were in high school to jamming around the neighbourhood in their early 20s.

Harrison, bassist Glen Williams and guitarist Matt Morris have been there from the beginning, close to 10 years of playing together. They added their newest member, drummer Andy Neilson, especially for that tour.

“He’s a breath of fresh air. It’s really great,” Harrison said.

In Australia, they have become known for gritty, loud, edgy live shows and have built a national following.

They have released three EPs and a full-length album, Prison Earth, in 2010.

The 2014 album was their first Canadian release. It featured their first top-10 single, Shake It Like You Mean It, co-written with Billy Talent guitarist Ian D’Sa, who also collaborated with the band on their most recent single, Black Rebel, also the name of an EP released the same year.

Harrison, who has always wanted to be a musician, grew up playing the drums and learned the guitar, but when it comes to performing, he prefers to stick with vocals.

He and Matt Morris are the primary songwriters and inspiration can come from anywhere.

“We like to make sure there is lots of melody, the lyrics mean something and there is a good beat to it,” Harrison said.

During its first Canadian tour, the band opened for One Bad Son, The Trews, Danko Jones and Big Wreck.

The Lazys perform Monday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at The Red Dog. Admission is $5.
