Wild crash in East City
Children helped out of SUV left hanging in air after crashing into pole on Driscoll Terrace in East City last night
Two small children and a woman got out of their SUV safely on Thursday night after the vehicle went up a hydro pole in East City.
The black SUV was in a precarious position when emergency crews arrived at the scene on Driscoll Terrace, near Hunter St. E., at about 6:30 p.m.
The front end of the SUV was pointed skyward and held there by a guide wire for the pole.
Madison Bradley, 18, saw the crash.
Bradley was driving south along Driscoll Terrace when she saw the SUV coming toward her. What happened next was odd.
“She just drove straight up the pole,” Bradley said. “Literally – she just drove directly up the pole. There was no impact or anything.”
Bradley said she immediately pulled over and rushed to the SUV.
She found a woman at the wheel. In the backseat there was a toddler boy and a girl – about age seven – in their car seats.
Bradley said she asked if everyone was OK, then removed the children from their car seats and took them across the street to safety.
She said it was a mother and her children, and that they seemed uninjured when they got out of the SUV.
“She (the driver) said she didn’t know what happened,” Bradley said. “It was just bizarre, the whole thing.”
Peterborough police, firefighters and paramedics were at the scene. Two Peterborough Utilities trucks were also called to the scene.
A small group of people including a woman, a toddler and a little girl remained there for at least an hour.
Firefighters used metal jacks to hold the car securely in place so a cherrypicker could come and deal with the hydro wires above.
The SUV wasn’t removed until sometime after 8:30 p.m.
No further information was released from police Thursday night. City police were still investigating.
