Mustang show added to Warkworth Fair

HARWOOD - People will be able to get up close and personal with some mustang horses at this year’s Warkworth Fair when wellknown Harwood rancher Randy Bird brings a new show to the annual fair Sept. 10 and 11.

Mustang Magic combines a 20-minute clip from a film about the mustangs Bird helped rescue from Wyoming in the United States with the results of caring for them and training them in Northumberland County.

The show is the product of Randy Bird Equine Education.

A third-generation Mustang, named Jackson, is among the trio of horses that will be driven and ridden by Bird. And while the morning and afternoon shows will be a finite period of time, Bird and his crew will have quarters where young and old alike can pet the horses, take selfies with them, and see the offspring of wild mustangs that once roamed free through rugged territory south of the border.

In 2005, Bird brought five mustang geldings and three mustang mares in foal back to Canada.

The first young horse born in the area is named Cody and he will be among those people can see at the Warkworth Fair. The third horse people will see there is a rescue who has been with Bird for many years but is not a mustang.

There are not many opportunities to see 100% Mustangs, Bird said during an interview on his Harwood Road ranch south of Rice Lake, but the upcoming fair is one of them.

This is the second for this new presentation, with the first during a fair in Minden earlier this year, he said.

His ring crew include his daughter Kristy Bird, Phil Turner, David Cole, and Kevin and Madison White.

Bird said he is proud to be bringing another agricultural element to fall fairs and returning them to the focus on “what they use to be.”
