Current system gives us faulty leadership

-

Looks like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and MP Maryam Monsef have both misled Canadians about proportional representation (PR). Close to 130,000 Canadians have signed the parliamentary e-petition – the fastest growing petition of all time – calling for electoral reform. It is a parliamentary petition that closes at 11:20 a.m. Thursday.

If you have not signed and would like to do so, go to the parliamentary website as follows: https://petitions.parl.gc.ca/en/ Petition/Details?Petition=e-616 or google “e-616”. You may want to encourage your friends, neighbours and family to sign also.

Given the number of signatures from across the country, it could be considered a representative sample of what Canadians want.

Trudeau’s false claims that PR could allow a fringe party to get elected is pure nonsense because of a threshold rule below which there is no top-up. Remember the last election? We were asked to STOP HARPER, originally a fringe leader of a right-wing party that eventually got 100 per cent of the power with 39.62 per cent of the popular vote.

Our present first-past-the-post system of electing governments regularly allows a minority of voters to get 100 per cent of the power with no checks.

The U.S. has just elected Trump who received several million fewer votes than Clinton but won power because of the FPTP system of their electoral college.

That is also how we got the Wynne government elected with 38.65 per cent of the popular vote but holding 100 per cent of the power.

Trudeau has 100 per cent of the power with only 39.47 per cent of the popular vote. He is continuing the dismantling of Canada begun by Harper and earlier prime ministers most of whom had a minority of the votes but 100 per cent of the power.

Politics should not be like a sports event where the winner is the first one across the finish line or the team with the most goals.

If he does not keep his promise that every vote will count, Trudeau will be the next prime minister we will have to stop. He has already broken 29 of his promises. Herb Wiseman Village Cres.
