Millbrook Bantam Stars win gold at home World Junior Classic tourney

MILLBROOK -- After finishing the Lakeshore League season with a 27-19-9 record, the Millbrook Bantam BEA Transit Solutions Stars wrapped up their 2016-17 season by competing in the inaugural World Junior Classic tournament in Millbrook last weekend.

Each team was assigned a county to represent and Millbook carried the flag of Canada.

The Millbrook Bantams went undefeated over six games to win the gold medal at the tourney.

The Stars defeated Belarus (Lakefield) 5-2, Switzerlan­d (Percy) 4-1 and Russia (Dorchester) 3-0 on Friday.

Charlie McEldon had the Game 3 shutout and also had a shutout in Game 4 on Saturday in a 3-0 win over Finland (Coldwater).

After round robin play Millbrook was tied for first place in the A pool with Czech Republic (Woodville) at 12 points. The deciding factor was goals for/against percentage and this put Millbrook in second earning the first wildcard spot and a semi-final berth. Canada played Russia in the semifinal matchup with Millbrook winning 3-1 over Dorchester to advance to the gold medal game Sunday afternoon against the Czech Republic.

Team staff included coach John MacDonald, trainer Mike Simpson, assistant coach Jamie Grant and assistant coach Roland Greber. Millbrook District Minor Hockey Associatio­n tournament convenor Matthew Greber oversaw the tournament, which is expected to return next season.
