CAA looks at Peterborough’s worst roads
The Canadian Automobile Association is working on its annual list of the worst roads in Ontario, and Peterborough isn’t being overlooked.
Raymond Chan, CAA government and community relations specialist, paid a visit Wednesday to inspect the worst roads as part of the organization’s annual Worst Roads Campaign.
“It’s really about giving the public a voice,” said Chan about the campaign. “We find members of the public that contact us don’t know how to get a hold of a local elected official.”
Chan was in Peterborough Wednesday, taking a look at trouble spots such as Simcoe St., Otonabee Dr. and the so-called worst road in town, Lansdowne St.
CAA will eventually release its list of the worst roads in the province. Chan said that this campaign is something municipalities pay attention to, and often roads get fixed as a result.
It isn’t just about making roads better for cars though, he said.
The CAA also wants to hear from cyclists and transit riders about road infrastructure and traffic signs that may negatively affect them during their travels, Chan said.
The association comes up with the Top 10 worst roads from nominations made by the public through their website, he said. The five worst roads in eight regions throughout Ontario are also highlighted, he said.
More 2,500 roads in Ontario were nominated for the Top 10 list last year, according to a release from the auto club.
“Roadways can be nominated for reasons such as potholes, deteriorating pavement, poor or nonexistent cycling or walking infrastructure or poor road signs,” the release states.
NOTE: The campaign runs from April 10 to May 1. People can cast their vote for the worst roads in Ontario at caaworstroads.com and view updates on the vote tallies.
