Conflict distracts from heart, spirit of market

-

As the saying goes, there are two sides to every story, so hopefully this will answer some questions from “our side” seeing as how a small number of disgruntled vendors have taken to the media, mayor, lawyer and whomever will listen!

It is unfortunate that this has been blown to such proportions because it is taking away from the true spirit and heart of the market! People come to Peterborough Farmers Market to buy the “best” there is in produce, eggs, cheese, plants, breads, preserves, honey, maple syrup, crafts, meats, fish, home cooking, baked goods, etc.

In the summer it is a “social frenzy” of people socializing, walking their dogs, partaking in food tastings, enjoying the weather, and “feel good” ambiance of this traditional market!

There are over 100 vendors outside in the summer Inside, approximately 80, therefore there isn’t room for everyone! When my husband and I came here nine years ago there was a waiting list for outside. We were very happy that market manager Brenda McAdam found a spot for us and we understood that we would be moved around until a permanent spot was free. We were happy and privileged to be part of this organization which is over 190 years of age, one in which some vendor families have been partaking in for generations!!

There also has to be a balance of vendors. There is a certain percentage of farmers, craft people, honey, maple syrup, etc. I personally had to wait six years to come inside the building. It never crossed my mind to hire a lawyer! The rules and regulations are put in place for everyone to follow and MOST do!

Market manager Brenda McAdam has been doing this job for over 17 years, coming in Saturdays between 5:30 and 6 a.m. to make sure everything is running smoothly.

Besides taking calls, answering e-mails throughout the week, going to board meetings, arranging applications, she is also helping to organize “fun days” such as Peach and Corn Day!

It isn’t uncommon to see her or her trusty sister Marion (who helps out huge) cleaning the floor. We are very fortunate to have them both and Brenda would love to be making $40,000 the sum of which the small group of vendors have suggested paying a new market manager for one day! I wonder what they plan to do for the other six days? Janet Lewis Just like Mom’s
