Special Olympians golden

St. Peter Saints win provincial Special Olympics school basketball championsh­ips; Peterborou­gh to host provincial­s next year

St. Peter Saints athletes carted home 29 medals including 14 gold from the Special Olympics Ontario School Championsh­ips at Brock University in St. Catharines.

The Saints won 14 gold, nine silver and six bronze medals and were met by a screaming throng of more than 500 fellow students when they arrived back at St. Peter Secondary School on Wednesday afternoon.

“It was a wonderful return home,” said Saints coach Ernie Ellement. “It was a very exciting two days.”

The Saints unified basketball team won the gold medal. Team members include Quinten Over, Justin Monk, Kailey Polson, Ryan Shaughness­y and Addie Bethune.

The unified soccer team captured a silver medal. Team members include Trent Burgomaste­r, Annie Lawler, Stone Shearer, Kaden Telford, Brock Bolton and Matt McNamara.

The track and field team accounted for 27 medals led by Miranda Moorcroft’s six medals including five gold and one silver. Brianna Middleton had one gold, four silver and one bronze. Jacob Loundsbury won one gold and one bronze. Jakob Keeling got two gold, a silver and bronze. Tyler Traynor won two gold, a silver and two bronze. Jessica Miller earned a gold, silver and bronze.

“Special thank you goes out to Courtney Morley, Addie Bethune, Ryan Shaughness­y, Matt McNamara and Jordan Arnold for their continuing support of all of our Special Olympians,” Ellement said.

The St. Peter track and field team was presented with a special gold medal for being the outstandin­g unified track and field school.

Peterborou­gh will host the 2018 provincial school championsh­ips. During the closing ceremonies, there was a flag and torch hand off from a student from Niagara to Over to symbolize the exchange of host cities.

“It was a wonderful moment in time for all of us and the coaches are very proud of all of our champions,” Ellement said.

The Adam Scott Lions basketball team finished in fifth place.
