A teacher billed as a master of a science-based meditation is coming to Peterborough to teach sessions on the ancient method.

Swami Shree Yogi Satyam is the founder and president of the Kriyayoga Research Institute in India.

That’s where Kriyayoga originated. It’s a ancient form of meditation that’s based on science.

Satyam has been teaching Kriyayoga in Canada and the United States since 1994. He’s also the spiritual head of Yog Fellowship Temple, a Kriyayoga meditation centre in Kitchener.

Keene resident Ann Edwards has been practising Kriyayoga for 23 years.

“It changed the trajectory of my whole life,” she said.

The retired monk started Peterborough Kriyayoga in 2016, bringing Satyam to Peterborough to teach for a few days last year.

“I decided that it’s such a part of my life that I would like to open it up here,” she said.

The mother of two said she was surprised by the large turnout to see Satyam. It inspired her to bring him back again – this time for a longer stay.

Satyam is teaching over eight days this year, from July 29 to Aug. 5.

He’ll be running free sessions in Peterborough, Lakefield and Bobcaygeon, a total of 16 overall.

Edwards said Kriyayoga is different than other styles of meditation, calling it an “inner journey to yourself.”

“In essence, when you reduce the distance between body and mind to zero, you become self-realized, you pass the programmed mind.” While self realization is often the desired outcome of Kriyayoga meditation, it offers other benefits, too.

“The very least it will do for you is bring you inner peace and help you relax,” said Edwards.

To keep the Kriyayoga meditation process on track, Edwards runs a weekly session where she screens videos of Satyam’s teachings.

The group sessions pick back up Sept. 5 at the Sadleir House lecture hall on George St. They run from 7 to 9 p.m.

Edwards encourages residents to go to as many sessions with Satyam as they can to get a firm grasp of the meditation style.

“The more (people) come, the more they’ll learn and the more they’ll benefit.”
