All 29 Peterborough Special Olympic athletes who attended the 2017 Ontario Special Olympics Summer Games from July 13 to 15 in Peel Region returned home with medals.
Lisa Butler won six medals including three gold medals in javelin, 400 metre and shot put, silver medals in the 800m run and 4×400 women’s relay and a bronze medal in the running long jump.
Richard Byrd earned a silver in the 4×100m men’s relay and a bronze in javelin. Lauren Ralph won three gold in shot put, running long jump and 4×100m women’s relay and silver in the 200m run. The athletes were all coached by Perry Byrd.
In bocce, Jesse Campbell won gold, Tiffany Davis silver and Mike Brioux earned bronze.
The Peterborough Vipers soccer team coached by Barb Henry, Joe Muldoon and Debbie Murphy Quinlan won the gold medal. Team members include Candace Bushie, Ryan Clapper, Crystal Cochrane, Brian Davis, Jasmine Davis, Terry Drummond, Meagan Glaeser, Julie Henry, Nicole Hewitt, Chris Hutts, Robert McGregor and Kacee Quinlan.
The Peterborough Lions soccer team, coached by Patrick Henry, Michele Turco and Nicole Turco earned the silver medal. Team members include Dylan Armstrong, Ryan Blinn, Steve Caban, John Clark, Mike Johnston, Spencer Knapton-Oakes, Mike Ludlow, Quinten Over, Corey Pecoskie, Brandon VanSickle and Jacob Zitman.
“Our Peterborough Special Olympians represented our city well demonstrating outstanding perseverance, skill and sportsmanship,” said coach Debbie Murphy Quinlan. Marshall's beat Leahy Electric 10-0 in a gamed ended in the fourth inning by the mercy rule in Peterborough Men's Softball Association city men's league action Thursday night at the George (Red) Sullivan East City Bowl. Albert Spenna slammed two home runs in the third inning for Marshall's and Cam Heffernan had a double. The Curve Lake Terry's Gas Bar Slayers overcame a 2-1 deficit with a comeback in the fifth and sixth innings for a 12-2 win over Kangas Equipment Repair. Steve MacNaughton was the winning pitcher and he also had a home run. In Tuesday action, the Slayers shut out Leahy Electric 3-0 while Marshall's beat Kangas 9-6. Action resumes next Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. at the George (Red) Sullivan East City Bowl.
