Curlers in pre-trials

Samantha Garside, of the Peterborou­gh Pirates Triathlon Club, races to first place in the girls 10-11 division at the Stittsvill­e Kids of Steel Triathlon.

Peterborou­gh Pirates Triathlon Club athletes earned medals at the Stittsvill­e Kids of Steel Triathlon last weekend in the second stop of Triathlon Ontario’s Youth Cup Series.

Highlights included gold and bronze in the boys 10-11 race for Noah Olauson and Logan Garside, respective­ly. In the 10-11 year old girls race Samantha Garside won gold with silver in the 12-13 Youth Cup boys race to Simon Scholey and silver and bronze in the 12-13 Youth Cup girls race for Mackenzie Garside and Nadiya Elmhirst.

Mackenzie Garside and Nadyia Elmhirst also currently hold second and third spots overall for the series. Other finishers included Ali Jones (sixth), Morgan McFadden (seventh), Taylor Tompkins (12th) and Danica Deck (13th).

The 14-15 year old event debuted a new style of racing for this age group. The athletes completed three mini-triathlons over a four hour time period.

This challengin­g Grand Prix format allowed athletes the opportunit­y to develop a number of skills that are needed to progress beyond the provincial level including race recovery, distractio­n control, speed, race tactics and strategy and race preparatio­n and reflection.

Finishers included Cassie Greer (fifth), Anna Harris (seventh), Hunter Scholey (seventh), Patrick Tompkins (ninth), Anna DeLeeneer (10th), Grant Black (11th), Adam Voutier (14th) and Lily Stibbards-Lyle (15th).

The next race in the Youth Cup series is in Tecumseh on July 30 where the athletes 14 and 15 years old will also compete for five qualifying spots per gender for next year’s Ontario Summer Games in London. Two Peterborou­gh curlers are in the field confirmed for the 2017 Home Hardware Road to the Roar of the Rings Pre-Trials in Summerside, P.E.I., Curling Canada announced on Thursday. Don Bowser is vice for Greg Balsdon's Cataraqui Golf and Country Club team and Jamie Farnell is an alternate for Mark Bice's Sarnia-baseed team. They are among 14 men's and 14 women's teams who will compete in the pre-trials Nov. 6-12 at Credit Union Place. They will vie for entry into the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Olympic Trials to be held Dec. 2-10 in Ottawa. Peterborou­gh's John Epping has already qualified for the Roar of the Rings.
