Jr. C Lakers, Shamrox open playoff series Saturday
The loss of her sister keeps Janet Mahood motivated to run the fourth annual Birdies 4 Breast Cancer Care charity golf tournament.
Mahood and her parents Hayward and Margaret MacDonald started the tournament in 2014 after Denise MacDonald was diagnosed with breast cancer.
”We started this tournament in 2014 with the objective of raising funds for women diagnosed with breast cancer who may need assistance during treatment and recovery,” Mahood said. “The proceeds go to a bursary program administered in co-operation with My Left Breast and their suppliers to provide the basic essentials to those who cannot afford them.”
Denise had a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer and despite a double mastectomy and heavy dosages of chemotherapy, she lost her battle in 2015.
Through her surgery and treatment process, she was introduced to My Left Breast, a business and support system in Peterborough started and staffed by breast cancer survivors. They offer mastectomy fittings, bras, bathing suits and clothing, wigs, scarves and hats to use during chemotherapy. More importantly, they offer emotional support and access to other local groups and organizations, Mahood said.
While prosthesis devices are partially covered by the government, the only coverage for other items is through private insurance, she said.
Since 2014, with the help of golfers, sponsors and donors, the tournament has raised $31,422.94. That money has helped more than 180 women to date get wigs, prosthesis, mastectomy clothing and treatments to help them in their recovery.
Registration is open for this year’s four-person team scramble tournament on Aug. 25 at Heron Landing Golf Club with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Organizers are also looking for sponsors and prize donations.
The cost is $100 per person or $400 per team which includes golf, cart, light lunch, dinner and opportunities to win prizes. There are open and mixed divisions. There will also be a silent auction and raffle.
