Minimum wage hike is not ‘too much too soon’

-

Stu Harrison, the president and CEO of the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, stated in a release that the government’s plan to hike the minimum wage is too much too soon.

I would really like to know where he and his affiliates are coming from.

It’s been years since the minimum wage has had a half-decent hike. The only thing that I can see that’s too much too soon is their thinking and attitude towards the people working for wages that represent nothing but a disgrace.

I’ll bet if the government gave the businesses people a real big tax break, that wouldn’t be too much too soon. They would all be marching to the bank with a big smile on their face.

I don’t think these people work for $10, $11 and hour. If they didn’t, maybe their thinking would be very much different.

It never fails, it seems, when there’s something half-decent for the lower wage earners, there’s always those people, like the Chamber of Commerce and others, who just degrade and criticize the idea.

It’s no wonder we have people on welfare, people sleeping on the streets and to top it all off, Peterborough has got the worst unemployment rate in Canada.

It’s no wonder there is not much of an incentive with the wages paid in this town.

A good worker deserves a fair wage, period. Richard Harper Monaghan Rd.
