Artist Carol Forbes in the abstract
The opening reception for the show Out of My Mind: Abstract Paintings by Carol Forbes will take place at the Kawartha Artists’ Gallery and Studio on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with refreshments and artist present.
Carol Forbes began to paint in 2008 after she retired from 25 years of teaching psychology at Fleming College.
“I started taking art courses at the Haliburton School of Art + Design,” she says. “I’m fascinated with form, line and colour and the infinite possible combinations of those elements. I think of it as being like DNA: endless ways to express the building blocks of visual perception.”
Forbes generally pains in a nonobjective or abstract style using acrylic and oil paint. She is also interested in fabric collage.
“I’m aware of how the brain is always looking for familiar patterns and I’m delighted with the variety of perceptions that my paintings elicit,” she continues.
Forbes has been a member of the Kawartha Artists’ Gallery and Studio for two Carol Zears, serving on sitting and hanging committees.
When asked why she likes to create art, she responds, “At first painting was simply a way to play and enjoy life. I would lose track of time and become totally immersed in the process. It seems to be a world apart from language. Over the years I have discovered how much there is to learn about colour and composition and the creative process itself. I’m interested in the delicate integration of knowledge about art and the intuitive process of art-making.”
Forbes’ advice for budding artists is “not to take your interest for granted - follow it and feed it. What is of primary importance is the desire to create and the commitment to do it; all else will follow as you pursue your passion.”
Forbes was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but has lived most of her life in the Kawarthas. She has degrees in history, psychology, and education. She has two grown sons who also live in the area.
The show runs from October 11 to 22. Located at 430 O’Connell Rd., the gallery is open daily from Wednesday to Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please call 705-741-2817, or visit www.kawarthaartists.org.
