Blessing of the Animals at St. John the Evangelist

St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church presents Blessing of the Animals, Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m.

The service is a celebratio­n of the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, who is renowned for his love of animals.

Everyone is invited to bring their feathered, furry, and scaly friends to the service of worship to be blessed. Pets should be leashed, as some get excited when they meet new friends. Trent Film Society

A public screening of Evil Dead 2 (1987, rated R) directed by Sam Raimi, presented by the Trent Film Society, takes place Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Market Hall, 140 Charlotte St. For more informatio­n, visit the Trent Film Society Facebook page. This is event is free and all are welcome.

Pub Crawl

This Friday 13th, join Trent Valley Archive’s Scandals and Scoundrel Pub Crawl and listen to strange tales about Peterborou­gh’s historic taverns. Participan­ts will hear how liquor and hotel culture impacted Peterborou­gh’s past. The tour begins at 7 p.m. and is $22 per person not including food or beverages. Newcomer Women’s Tea

On Monday Oct. 16 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., newcomer women and their preschool children are invited to a social gathering at St. James United Church, 221 Romaine St., to meet other women new to Peterborou­gh.

Volunteers from Canadian Women for Women in Afghanista­n (CW4WAfghan) and Amnesty Internatio­nal will be there to welcome newcomers and share tea and light refreshmen­ts.

Nourish series

Basic Income and the Human Right to Food is the topic of a Nourish Food Series, Monday Oct. 16, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Peterborou­gh Public Health, 185 King St. Guest speaker Josephine Grey, a human rights activist and founder of Low Income Families of Toronto, will present a compelling case of how a basic income could help to secure a human right to food.

Nourish also presents a hands-on workshop to teach preserving techniques for pumpkins on Thursday Oct. 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. This workshop is free and takes place in Myrtle`s Kitchen, at Peterborou­gh Public Health. Book Launch

Trent University presents a book launch of Care Home Stories: Aging, Disability and Long-term Residentia­l Care, Tuesday Oct. 17 at Hunter Street Books, 164 Hunter St. W., from 5 to 7:30 p.m. This book examines nursing homes from the perspectiv­e of residents, workers and visitors. Authors from Austria, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States also offer their perspectiv­e from the discipline­s of literature, history, nursing and sociology.
