Adam Scott Lions senior boys soccer team has gone from zero to OFSAA in two months.

The Lions soccer program was resurrected after four years this season and on Friday afternoon captured the COSSA AA championship in Belleville. They secure a spot at OFSAA in June in Tecumseh.

The Lions beat Prince Edward 3-0 in the semifinals and Bayside Devils 2-0 in the final.

“I think there were a lot of players on this team who had the talent for so many years and it’s kind of been lying dormant,” said Lions coach Jen Nugent.

“They haven’t had the opportunity to put it to use. I feel really honoured I had the opportunity to take these guys, who have been so determined and ready to play for so long, and give them the chance to get on the field and show what they’ve got.”

A fan bus of 25 students made the trek to cheer them on.

“When that final whistle blew the boys rushed onto the field and the fans joined them. It was a really magical moment to see that school spirit and community,” Nugent said.

“They worked so hard and really deserved it. Moving onto OFSAA after not having a program for four years is almost unthinkable. I knew they had the ability and talent within them but to see it all come to fruition on the field today was pretty incredible.”

Scoring against Prince Edward was Jacob Imeson, Mickle O’Neil and Stew Merrett. O’Neil and Tag Krotz scored in the final. Max Merrett picked up the shutout in each game.

In the junior final, Cobourg ’s St. Mary Thunder beat Crestwood Mustangs 2-0. Crestwood reached the final beating Bayside 2-1 on goals from Trevor Davis and Waleed Arar.

In COSSA senior AAA soccer at Trent University, Cobourg Collegiate Wolves beat East Northumberland 2-0 in the final. They beat St. Theresa 3-2 in the semifinals while ENSS downed the Holy Cross Hurricanes 1-0.
