Stop pollution before it has a chance to start

- NAOMI STOCK TOWN naomi.stock@gmail.com

The old way to prevent pollution was to capture pollutants before they left the factory or chemical plant, which of course costs money.

A new approach is Green Chemistry, which involves designing the process so that pollutants aren’t made in the first place, which reduces the environmental impact and makes industries more economically competitive. Green Chemistry is the topic of this year’s Stairs Lecture in Chemistry, with guest speaker Dr. Phillip Jessop, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Market Hall, 140 Charlotte St. Jessop is the Canada Research Chair of Green Chemistry at Queen’s University in Kingston.

The lecture is presented by Trent University and was established by Dr. Roberts Stairs, a professor emeritus at Trent University, and his wife Sibyl. Admission is free and all are welcome. A reception will follow the lecture. For more information, please visit www.mycommunity. trentu.ca/stairs
