Em br dale Farm family to be honoured at banquet Friday
The Stockdale family of Embrdale Farm in Norwood Township have been named the 2017 Farm Family of the Year by the Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture and the Greater Peter borough Chamber of Commerce.
David and Cathy Stockdale have been farming for 26 years at 2525 Asphodel 4 th Line, where there are 145 head of cattle and 65 milking cows, according to a release.
The Stockdales own 310 acres and rent an additional 180 acres for crops, the release states. They use a mix that includes haylage, corn silage and high moisture corn with additional proteins added. The corn silage and high moisture corn are grown on 100 acres, while another 100 acres are devoted too ats, used for green feed or straw, and all are underseeded. They also raised 250 acres of hay for the herd.
In April they won their second Master Breeder Shield.
The couple have four children – Steven( Kelsey ), Cameron( Emily ), Brett( Erin ), and Rebecca makeup the fourth generation living and working on the family farm and a fifth generation has started with Brett and Erin’s daughter Kaylee.
The Stockdales are all active in 4-H, either as members or leaders after graduating 4-H. They also sit on the 4-H board of directors and serve as the editor for the local 4- H newsletter.
They are also involved with the Peterborough Holstein Club and the Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture.
Family members also volunteer with the Norwood Fair and Lang Pioneer Village Museum and compete in synchro skating.
The award will be presented at the annual Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture Banquet on Friday night at the Peter borough Curling Club, 2195 Lansdowne St.
