Artist still exploring the colours of nature

- MARLYS KERKMAN BUCKHORN kerkmam@gmail.com

At a recent exhibit of the work of John Lennard at the Gallery on the Lake, one of Lennard’s students was in attendance. He said that John taught him that tree trunks aren’t necessarily brown. And in Lennard’s paintings they certainly aren’t. They may be purple.

Lennard’s paintings reflect his love of nature through the use of oils to capture the effect of colour in sunlight and shadow. His exaggerated use of colour defines him as a colourist. The bold colour and strong design sensitizes the eye of the viewer to enter nature with a different view and see light and colour in the shadows that they never knew existed. Through this use of colour, light, shadow and pattern the viewer can feel as well as see what the artist experienced at the place and time that the image was created.

Lennard does not want to “merely engage in copying ” but to organize the surface of his work by placement, scale and colour to engage the viewer in larger issues that occupy the thought and energy of the artist.

John was born in Barrie and now resides in the Haliburton Highlands of Central Ontario. Graduating from Leaside High School he studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and at the Art Students League in New York City. In the over 40 years that he has devoted to painting, he still finds the Canadian landscape provides an unending source of subject matter and is a constant artistic inspiration.
