The Warden’s WorryA5

Avid angler Joe Taylor, the county warden, offers a fishing trip for two fundraiser

- PAT MARCHEN KEENE KeeneNews@nexicom.net

The Warden of Peterborough County has a worry that does not seem so worrisome, unless you are a lake trout.

Joe Taylor’s worry is a Wardens Worry Wobbler, a Lucky Strike fishing lure that is particularly good at enticing trout, and has inspired a unique prize for a draw to benefit the United Way.

Taylor, who once was a fishing guide in Northern Ontario and Manitoba, has offered to host a oneday fishing trip for two. He will provide the transportation to and fro, the boat, equipment and a shore lunch, featuring freshly caught lake trout. He is suggesting the Lake of Bays near Dorset as the destination and will coordinate the date with the winner’s schedule.

Lucky Strike is contributing fishing packages for the anglers that will include six-packs of Warden’s Worry trout spoons. All the anglers need to provide are valid fishing licences. If they prefer to take their catches home, Taylor will fillet and vacuum pack them. The fish, that is.

The draw will be made at the OSM Township office in Keene, where Taylor also serves as deputy reeve. Dustin Rhodes of Lucky Strike will draw the winning ticket on Jan. 16 at 10 a.m.

Only 400 of the $5 tickets were printed and it looks like they will be sold out. Tickets may still be available at the United Way Office at the corner of King and Stewart Streets in Peterborough.

A Farmer’s Diary

John Graham Weir was born in Otonabee in 1844 and kept daily journals from 1880 until 1925. The journals are now at Trent Valley Archives.

1891 Jan. 8, Thurs.

We were moving straw from the far barn and covering the clover meadow to prevent the frost injuring the young clover. We had a houseful of friends this evening. They stayed until three o’clock in the night. There were six from Leary’s, five from Grahams, Mitchells, John Moore and wife and Bertie Graham.

1891 Jan. 10

George Mitchell took a load of oat straw to D. Bellingham and I took a load of hay (2200 lbs.) to Mr. Belcher, the Engineer. I took the hay on the wagon and the straw on the sleigh. This has been another lovely day. I never seen as much good and pleasant weather as there has been since the winter commenced. There is not an inch of snow on the ground and yet there is sleighing.
