‘Adopt’ an animal at the Riverview Park and Zoo

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL FUNDRAISING northcrest_column@yahoo.ca

If you would like to help support your favourite animal friend at Riverview Park and Zoo, consider the zoo’s adopt-an-animal program. When you adopt one of the zoo’s animals, your adoption fee goes towards the animal’s care, nutrition, enrichment and training, and veterinary and health care. With over 125 animals and 45 species, the zoo welcomes people who want to adopt an animal as this helps maintain the zoo’s excellent level of care.

Adoptions make great gifts for birthdays or other special occasions since you can make the adoption in someone else’s name. The adoptions are also something families, classes or friends can take on as a group project. Adoption fees range from $100 to $300. For $100 you can adopt a tortoise, python, goat, pot-bellied pig, macaw or emu. For $150 adopt a red-rumped agouti, monkey, meerkat, lemur, wallaby, donkey, barbary sheep or yak. A reindeer or bobcat costs $200; a serval or otter $250, while $300 gets you a sloth, Sichuan Takin, or one of the Bactrian Camels.

Each adoption includes an adoption certificate, and a photo and animal fact sheet about the selected animal. The adoption is also noted on the animal adoption board located in the centre of the zoo.

Adoptions are for one-year terms and can be renewed annually. Tax receipts are issued for each adoption.
