- EXAMINER STAFF

Doug Ford will be speaking in Peterborough and Lindsay this week in his campaign to become the leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative party.

Ford, a Toronto city councillor from 2010 to 2014 who was runnerup to John Tory in the 2014 Toronto mayoral race, will hold a meet and greet Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. at the Carousel Restaurant at 116 Lansdowne St. E.

He will then be at the Howard Johnson Inn in Lindsay at 354 Lindsay St. S. from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Ford, 53, is the son of Doug Ford Sr., who was Etobicoke-Humber MPP from 1995 to 1999 and founded Deco Labels and Tags, the family’s Etobicoke-based printing company.

His brother was the late Rob Ford, the controversial former mayor of Toronto.

Party members are voting March 2 to 8 for a new leader. The winner, to be announced at a March 10 convention, will lead the party in the June 7 provincial election.

A Forum Research poll published Monday shows the party at 49 per cent support, with Premier Kathleen Wynne’s governing Liberals at 24 per cent and the NDP at 19 per cent. The poll of 949 people was conducted Friday and Saturday.

The other candidates in the leadership race are former Whitby MPP Christine Elliott, York-Simcoe candidate Caroline Mulroney (daughter of former prime minister Brian Mulroney), former leader Patrick Brown, who announced Friday he is re-seeking the post after prompting the leadership race with his resignation last month over sexual assault allegations, and social conservative Tonya Granic Allen.
