It’s Heritage Week in Selwyn Township

Starting today, the township is celebratin­g Heritage Week. Selwyn Heritage Day will be this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Niels Pind Room of the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre. Enjoy displays of early Lakefield Council meeting minutes, and military memorabili­a from the Lakefield Legion museum. There will also be a deer hide drum-making demonstrat­ion by Curve Lake First Nation, Wampum Belts representi­ng historic treaties among nations, wooden carvings and toys, and a history trivia contest. Admission is free and the event is for all ages.

Heritage Day is hosted by the Selwyn Municipal Heritage Committee, Lakefield Legion Branch 77, Christ Church Community Museum, Trent Valley Archives, Curve Lake First Nation, Brian Charles and Rev. Murray Lincoln.

The Selwyn Municipal Heritage Committee has also held the 2018 Selwyn Heritage Week Art Contest, with this year’s theme being traditions. Winning submission­s and honourable mentions will be displayed in the Bridgenort­h Library during Heritage Week as well as at the Selwyn Heritage Day event.

We Belong

Are you interested in meeting new people in your community? On Feb. 28 there will be a free community dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lakefield United Church, located at 47 Regent Street. The dinner is entitled We Belong: Kina Dibendaago­zwag and is hosted by the Nourish Project, the Lovesick Lake Native Women’s Associatio­n, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Families are welcome and the event is wheelchair accessible. Register before Feb. 26 at noon by phoning 705-652-8787.

Career Fair

There will be a career fair on March 1 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Lakefield Legion, located at 10 Nicholls St. in Lakefield. This is a free event for job seekers of all ages, employers and community agencies. For additional informatio­n, please contact Debbie at 705-740-2577 ext. 5212.

Lenten Lunches

Lenten Lunches happen on Thursdays during Lent from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. This Thursday’s speaker will be Father Ray Rick from Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church. Admission is $5 per person.

Abbeyfield House

AHSL held a public forum on Feb. 8 and had approximat­ely 35 attendees.

Dr. Elizabeth Russell, assistant professor of psychology at Trent University, introduced Natalie Jennings, Laurel Pirrie, Kara Rutherford, and Amy Smith who are undergradu­ate students who have been conducting the needs survey on behalf of AHSL in Lakefield since September 2018 and who conducted three focus groups during the second half of the meeting.

Results from both the survey and the forum will be available in April.

February Beat

This Saturday, the Lakefield Lions will host a February Beat dance fundraiser starting at 8 p.m. at the Lakefield Legion. The band True Confession­s will be performing, playing music from the ‘60s and ‘70s. There will be a cash bar, light lunch, and a 50/50 draw. Tickets are $20 each and are available from Home Hardware Lakefield, Canoe & Paddle, Salon Sorella Lakefield, the Honky Tonk in Bridgenort­h, the Thirsty Loon, and the Kawartha Chamber of Commerce in Lakefield. Community Care

The Community Care February Frolic will be on Feb. 24 from 8 p.m. to midnight at the North Kawartha Community Centre, located at 340 McFadden Rd. in Apsley. Montana Sky will be playing, as well as the Tom N’ Gary Duo. There will be a silent auction, 50/50 draw, and food provided by Jen Shee. This will be an age of majority event.
