Chiefs lead 3-0

The Lakefield Chiefs took a strangleho­ld on their PJHL Orr Division semifinal by running their winning streak to 20 games on the weekend.

The Chiefs followed up a 7-1 win in Apsley on Friday night with a 6-3 victory over the North Kawartha Knights at the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre on Saturday night. The Chiefs, sponsored by Hendren Funeral Homes, lead the best-of-seven series 3-0. They’ll try to wrap it up 7:25 p.m. Tuesday at the North Kawartha Community Centre.

On Friday, Jeff Hawthorne had two goals and an assist to lead the offence. Zac Treen scored twice with singles to Matt McIntyre, Aaron Vatcher and Matt Carroll. Adding assists were Ethan McDougall with two and singles to Evan Durant, Cole Ellis, Mitch Ogilvie, Jordan MacLean, Tarren Jank, McIntyre and Vatcher. Michael Christie made 22 saves. Matt Wilbee scored for the Knights. Simon Wood made 31 saves in the loss.

Saturday’s game was tied 3-3 with 8:59 left in the third before Lakefield reeled off three unanswered goals starting with Treen’s second of the game at 14:48. Cole Robbins had two goals and an assist, Jank a goal and assist and Connor Ellis also scored. McDougall and McIntyre had two assists and Hawthorne one. Christie stopped 26 shots.

Wilbee scored twice for the Knights and Shawnessy Borden once. Cole Arnold, Christian Lachapelle, Joe Crothers and Dustin Gauvreau had assists. Wood faced 33 shots.
