The Peterborough Examiner

New-look Examiner

The 90-day transition from Postmedia to Metroland leads to this edition of your daily paper

- KENNEDY GORDON EXAMINER MANAGING EDITOR

Your local daily newspaper now under Metroland banner.

Today's edition of The Examiner represents our relaunch as a Metroland Media publication. The paper was sold to Metroland Nov. 27, but we've spent three months working out the details in order to prepare for today. That turned out to be a pretty big job. We were firmly entrenched in the Postmedia ecosystem, with everything from our email addresses to our printing shared with the many papers across the chain. So a lot of things had to happen. Some changes are obvious. We have a new front-page logo, one that takes our classic Examiner look and updates it with a modern touch. Our overall look has changed, bringing us in line with other Metroland papers, including The Hamilton Spectator. Our departure from Postmedia also means our contact information has changed. New phone extensions and new email addresses have taken effect. You can reach me at 705-7454641 ext. 2438, and by email at a new address: kennedy.gordon@peterboroughdaily.com.

We'll EXAMINER FILE PHOTO Readers check out The Examiner's evening edition of May 7, 1945. have a full contact list for our newsroom and sales staff available shortly. Many other changes are happening behind the scenes. During our years owned by Sun Media and then Postmedia, our page production was carried out at a centre in Barrie, and our papers were printed at Postmedia's Islington production plant in Toronto. Beginning Monday, the production team at the Spectator is handling the daily layout and design of our pages. Our newsroom team – no changes there – will continue to write and photograph the news each day, with the specialists in Hamilton putting it together for you. Our printing is happening in Smith's Falls, and has for several weeks, with the print edition trucked back to Peterborough first thing in the morning. In order to make all this work, our staff has been training on the use of new, updated content management software. That move to Smith's Falls has meant an earlier deadline for our print edition. Unfortunately, that means some content doesn't make it into print the next day. This includes sports results and breaking late-night news. That information can still be found 24 hours a day at peterboroughexaminer.com. Speaking of which, our website has a new look today. Gone is the design and experience used by Postmedia daily papers; we'll now resemble other Metroland papers' websites, as seen in Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and even right here, with mykawartha.com. Now, here's the catch: Monday was our first day working with new software, new systems and new people, so a decision was made to start production of this first paper, and finish it, much earlier in the day. Any issues we encountered could be addressed while still making our press start time Monday night. This is not ideal at the best of times, but with city council meeting Monday we knew our coverage of the meeting would not make it into print. We apologize for that. It's all online at www.peterboroughexaminer.com, and will be in tomorrow's print edition. We hope to get everything working smoothly over the next few days. The end result will be a new Examiner, fresh and updated and ready to keep bringing you the news of the day and more. Thank you for reading, and stay tuned – there are good things to come.
