Vimy ceremony was well-planned, moving
I read with interest an article published Dec. 13 in the Peterborough Examiner, which reflected on our government’s lack of planning regarding the Vimy Ridge Memorial Celebrations on April 9, 2017. I couldn’t disagree more. As someone fortunate enough to be there with my family, I found the whole experience amazing. The moment we arrived at Vimy, we were greeted by a Trent University student who provided us with information and guidance. There was more than enough food, which was served in a large dining tent, and a very adequate supply of water with each attendee being given a portable water container on arrival. Yes, there were line-ups for the bathroom, but who hasn’t experienced that at any major event. As it was unexpectedly warm that day, there were tents to get out of the sun as well as helpers to assist those feeling too hot. Yes, movement was restricted once the dignitaries showed up, but that was more for security and we expected that. As for the pushing and shoving to get on and off transportation, we saw anything but. There was a very well-behaved crowd patiently waiting. In fact, we were witness to many acts of kindness and generosity making us feel extremely proud to be Canadian. We made personal connections with members of our armed forces who went out of their way to drive us to and from the events of the day. Please don’t take the word of a few complainers. I’ve never been to an event which made me feel prouder of my country and fellow countrymen. Steve Seabrooke Selwyn
