Adam Scott, James Strath and Chemong public schools advanced to the Kawartha Pine Ridge Elementary Athletics Association (KPREAA) finals Friday in Cobourg after claiming the top spots in the north intermediate girls basketball competitive tournament Monday. The Adam Scott Lions were undefeated in round robin play and the playoffs, edging James Strath 10-8 in the gold medal game in the gymnasium of the Hilliard St. school. The tournament is usually low-scoring, so the better defend- er usually comes out on top, convenor and Lions coach Mike Colling said. His team was no exception, snaring its share of rebounds to hold on for the win. The game came down to the lass possession — James Strath had a mid-court throw-in with 2.9 seconds left on the clock, but could not get a shot off in time. Colling has also coached several of the girls in rugby and said it is one of the most dedicated, committed teams he has had the pleasure of coaching. “They never miss a practice,” he said. Grade 8 student Millicent MacDonald agreed, explaining how the squad is very good at helping each other through the ups and downs. “We work well as a team and we all support one another,” she said. The team will have to keep up the hard work if it wants to be successful at the board-wide finals, MacDonald said. “There will be a lot of good teams.” Chemong edged Westmount 8-6 in the bronze medal game to also advance to the board-wide meet at the Cobourg Community Centre. Adam Scott defeated Westmount 20-12 in one semi-final, while James Strath routed Chemong Public School 16-6 in the other. The tournament included six teams. In round robin play, teams were awarded three points for a win, two for a tie and one for a loss. Adam Scott finished first with 15 points, with James Strath, Westmount, Chemong, Lakefield and Millbrook following with 13, 11, nine, seven and seven points, respectively. In the first round of the playoffs, Westmount defeated Lakefield, while Chemong defeated Millbrook. The north intermediate boys basketball tournament will be held at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School on Tuesday.
