Candles glow at new shop in Keene

- PAT MARCHEN keenenews@nexicom.net

There is a lovely scent and a warm glow emanating from Keene these days and it’s thanks to a little shop in the old schoolhouse where the candle-making proprietor sells her own product.

Jennifer Foshay was making candles for nine years before she recently took a course with the Candle Academy in France. The ten month online course gave her access to a top European candle maker and his expertise.

Her candles are made of soy or paraffin and some are shaped to look like luscious desserts. The shop also sells items of home decor, updated furniture and photo cards crafted by local people and quilts made by her sister.

The Allen Wick Candle and Gift Shop is open Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is a little hard to spot, tucked into the east end of the old S.S. #4 schoolhouse, but it right across from a Keene landmark, Muddy’s Pit.

The Grand Opening will be April 19 to 22. There will be door prizes and the first fifty customers will get one of Jennifer's soybased tea light candles.

John Graham Weir

1889 April 20, Sat.

I finished sowing field No. #8 and sowed six bushels of the east part of field No. #6. I was sowing with Dean and Daisy, two colts that are three years old and I laid down the lines to help dump a cartload of stones. They got frightened and ran away and broke the drill into bits and now it’s not worth five cents.

1890 April 21, Mon.

Today we cultivated the ground and sowed some wheat, clover and timothy in field No. 7. After dinner I took to the Mattress Factory a load of flax straw and brought home a mattress and 100 lbs of flour. The mattress was five dollars and the flour was three dollars. We are having fine drying weather.
