Curve Lake teams find success at Little Native Hockey League tournament
Eight teams from Curve Lake First Nation played in the Little Native Hockey League's 47th annual tournament in Mississauga during the March Break.
Players shared their success with Curve Lake band council Monday, with players presenting ouncil with their championship banners.
More than 250 teams from Ontario First Nations took part.
Four Curve Lake teams came home champions. The two Nimkiins Kwe teams (Girls Novice and Girls Atom) and the Screaming Eagles (Atom Recreational) went undefeated and won their "A" championship games. The Cedar Bay Jr. Wanger's (Peewee Competitive) won the "C" championship game.
Other teams, including the four Screaming Eagles teams, played well, with the Novice Recreational team going to the final against eventual winner Garden River. The Tyke Recreational team, the Bantam Recreational team and the Midget Recreational team worked hard on the ice, with the Midget team finished the tournament with an on-ice salute to players taking part in their final LNHL tournament.
Two players from Curve Lake also took part, playing for teams from other First Nations: Brooklyn Jacobs (Serpent River – Girls Peewee) and Deacan Knott (Nipissing – Midget Competitive).
"We are so proud of all our teams, players, coaches, managers and families who work hard all year to attend this wonderful tournament and represent our community," stated Curve Lake Chief Phyllis Williams in a press release. "This tournament is always a special time for our community, it helps strengthen our connections within our own community and with all the Nations represented at the LNHL. We look forward to cheering on our teams next year, GO CURVE LAKE GO!"
