The Norwood and District Skating Club held its 21st annual awards on Friday at the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre.

The awards night marks the official end of the club’s milestone 50th season in the village and acknowledges the work and efforts of their members and volunteers over the past year.

Club president Nicky McNiece congratulated the skaters on another successful year. She also noted that with a membership of 95 skaters, the club was the largest it has been for many years.

The executive, the coaches and the program assistants were brought forward to be recognized and thanked for their invaluable contributions to the club.

The skaters from each division were called to the front of the room and presented with a certificate and a custom 50th anniversary NDSC backpack containing a bag of goodies. The awards for 2016-17 were then presented.

Winning the Cathy Ireland Memorial Award for Most Enthusiastic Skaters in the Canskate division was June Gendron and Hunter Callan, from the Intermediate division the award went to Margot Walsh and in the senior division the award went to Kathleen Walsh.

The club’s award for most Improved Skater in the Canskate division was shared by Hayley Carmichael and Charlotte Pearce, in the Intermediate skater division the most Improved Skater award went to Lindsay Jordan and from the senior skaters Claire Walsh was chosen to receive the accolade.

The Bank of Montreal Spirit of Skating Medal for Canskater of the year went to Kaitlyn Bolton and the Bank of Montreal Spirit of Skating Medals for the Canskate Champions were awarded to Leah LaRush, Makayla Carmichael, Brynn Begg, Troy Cox and Jolene Payne. The Hodge Family Award for Program Assistant of the Year was bestowed on Rhyanne Barr.

Special congratulations went to Alexa Vanderhorst for completing all the requirements to earn her Skate Canada Gold Dance Test Certificate. Earning this certificate is not an easy

process, in most cases taking over a decade to accomplish.

The final honour of the night was the presentation of the Volunteer of the Year Award to a surprised Sandy Cunningham in recognition of her many contributions to the club.

The evening wrapped up with everyone enjoying goodies and refreshments.

The club has had an exciting 50th season with several of their members also participating in many local and provincial competitions this past year. In late February the club showcased its skating skills to an enthusiastic

crowd at the Community Centre with the presentation of their annual ice show Back to the Future, a tribute to their five decades featuring recreations of past performances with many original members taking part.

The club’s annual meeting is May 10 at 8 p.m. at the president’s home, 1525 County Road 42 (Trent River Road).
