Slow start to spring in Buckhorn and area, gardeners hear

- kerkmam@gmail.com MARLYS KERKMAN SPECIAL TO THE EXAMINER

The spring luncheon happened again at that church by the locks – St. Matthew/St. Aidan. The community was there to enjoy a lovely meal prepared by church ladies and the presentation by Vicki and to support the mission of the church.

Rev. Glenn Empey opened the afternoon stating what this small church has donated to local outreach activities. The Buckhorn School Breakfast Program, Cameron House, support for ministry in the Arctic, the clean water project for Pikangikum in northwest Ontario, Lakefield community food bank, Trent Lakes Outreach Buckhorn, Trent Lakes Community Care, Victim Services, Peterborough are among some of the charities receiving the $4,000 donated by this church. The parish also contributes to local Trent Lakes Christmas and Easter hamper programmes as well as food goods for the local food bank during the year.

Plus, this church as do all parishes throughout the Diocese of Toronto, contributes annually to the work and ministry of the diocese. In addition to the direct outreach projects mentioned St. Matthew/St. Aidan will also contribute more than $9,000 in 2018 as its assessment to the diocese which includes support for numerous outreach ministries within TrentDurham and throughout the diocese.

Vicki started her spring talk telling us that plants aren’t growing as quickly and lively as usual. First March hit and April was cloudy. When there isn’t enough sunlight in a growing greenhouse it doesn’t allow plants to grow at normal speed. She predicts that plants will be strong and healthy but not lush. Garden centres are full of spring flowers.

With her she brought primula, English daisies, ranunculus, stock and pansy to design a stunning display.

There are local residents interested in establishing a dog park in the Buckhorn area. They have been meeting as a group discussing the need for a location, fencing, signage, obtaining signatures from interested residents and businesses. They have discussed the perks such a facility would provide to tourists and residents in the area. If you are interested, contact Sandi at sandi.dogwood@gmail.com.
