Wolverines surrender Cottage Cup to Stallions

The Huronia Stallions captured their first Cottage Cup over the Peterborou­gh Wolverines in Ontario Football Conference action in Barrie last weekend.

The three Wolverines teams were looking to recover from their opening weekend defeats to the Scarboroug­h Thunder.

The Wolverines were able to win one of the three games which allowed the Stallions to capture their first Cottage Cup in the three-year history of the series.

The lone Wolverines winner was the Jr. Varsity team with a strong and convincing 56-7 victory over the Stallions.

The Bantams lost 38-18 dropping their record to 0-2 and the Sr. Varsity lost in a rainy nightcap contest 24-12 to the Stallions.

In the opening game the Bantams started strong jumping out to a 12-0 lead. The Stallions started their comeback and lead 20-12 at the half. The Wolverines scored in the third quarter to close the gap to 20-18, however, the Stallions put it away in the fourth quarter scoring three touchdowns to seal the victory. Scoring for the Wolverines with single touchdowns were Ryan Forsythe, Nathan Luttrell and Spencer Watchorn.

The Bantams will travel to Aurora this Saturday to face the York Lions.

In the second game the Wolverines Jr. Varsity team improved their record to 1-1 with a convincing 56-7 victory.

The Wolverines had both a great offensive and defensive game. They were lead by Mack McFarlane who scored four touchdowns, one of which was a spectacula­r 104-yard kickoff return. Also scoring for the Wolverines with touchdowns were Kurt Cantello, Carson Harvey, Max LeVasseur and Thomas Switzer.

Spenser Vesnaver had a great day with seven convert kicks and a single.

The Jr. Varsity Wolverines will travel to Aurora to play the York Lions in the second game on Saturday.

In the final contest of the day the Sr. Varsity Wolverines lost 24-12 to the Stallions. The Stallions were able to take advantage of opportunit­ies scoring off Wolverines turnovers. They jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead with the Wolverines closing the gap to 17-12 with 32 seconds left in the half, but the Stallions capitalize­d on another turnover to score a TD as time expired increasing their lead to 24-12 at the half.

Both teams tightened their defences in the second half as the rain increased as neither team was able to score.

Scoring for the Wolverines with a TD was Nick Clarkin and Zachary Aucoin was successful on a 23-yard field goal and a convert kick. The Wolverines were awarded a team safety.

The Sr. Varsity Squad will also travel to Aurora to face the York Lions in the final game Saturday.
